The idea for an issue called “Sight and Sound” came to me in 2013, during my second year producing CONTENT (issue 5.1). My goal was to focus more on the image makers and sound artists in our region. I realized I was subconsciously defaulting to painters and designers, so I wanted to challenge myself to make space for actors, athletes, filmmakers, and photographers.

The mission of CONTENT has always been to be eclectic. Creatives and audiences often get stuck in their own silos simply because they aren’t aware of what else is out there, and I wanted to use different disciplines to bridge that gap. With this 14th edition of “Sight and Sound,” I think we’ve really achieved that.

This issue continues that diverse mix, and the artists featured on these pages reflect that variety. I’d like to highlight one artist in particular: Mauricio Rodriguez. I met Mauricio at a genARTS Silicon Valley meet-up and portfolio review (where I also met Natalia Drachinskaya). Even though he hadn’t presented this collection before and was a bit nervous about sharing it, I was blown away by the beauty and depth of his work. 

His compositions perfectly capture the heartbeat of “Sight and Sound.” By exploring the physicality of sound and imagining what it looks like through analog typing and printing, he creates a beautiful blend of old and new—bringing sound to sight.

We hope you enjoy his work and the other talented creators featured in this, our 74th issue.
