Fandango at the Wall
Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Tue, Dec 8 at 7pm (Pacific) // Zoom
In conjunction with the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, San Jose Jazz presents a free, private viewing of the acclaimed new HBO documentary Fandango at the Wall, which follows multi Grammy Award winner Arturo O'Farrill and 50 other musicians as they prepare to record a live album at the US–Mexico border. The film is inspired by the annual music festival called “Fandango Fronterizo,” which unites people in son jarocho song and dance on both sides of the Tijuana–San Diego border. The film gives the viewer an inspiring journey of Veracruz, Mexico, where the 300-hundred-year-old folk music combining indigenous, Spanish, and African traditions originated, and culminates at the annual border celebration promoting peace, and celebrating unity.
Registrants will be sent a password-protected link through which they can view the film in the days before the December 8 panel discussion, which will include Fandango Fronterizo festival founder Jorge Francisco Castillo; Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra founder Arturo O'Farrill; director Varda Bar-Kar and producer Kabir Sehgal.
