The Center for Literary Arts is pleased to host the launch of Reed Magazine: Issue 154. The livestream event will include a reading by some of the award-winning contributors to the issue. During the second half of the program, acclaimed author Patricia Engel will read from her latest book, Infinite Country, and have an audience Q&A.

Born out of trying to find some light in the middle of the pandemic, Reed Magazine: Issue 154, Cliché stands as a testament to the creative endeavors of our team of editors and loyal contributors. Celebrating our genre contest winners, including the 20th annual Steinbeck Award for Fiction, and the 5th annual Emerging Voices Contest highlighting Santa Clara County’s up-and-coming young writers and artists, this edition also features select winners of the AWP Intro Journals Award. Profile pieces include chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Ellen Bass; Believer Book Award-winning author, Rita Bullwinkel; art curator, Lance Fung; and a special in memoriam to rising Bay Area author, Anthony Veasna So. A wild and exciting collection of prose, poetry, and visual art, Issue 154 demands your attention and will be one that’ll be talked about for years to come.

In Infinite Country, award-winning, internationally acclaimed author Patricia Engel, herself the daughter of Colombian immigrants and a dual citizen, gives voice to Mauro and Elena, as well as their children, Karina, Nando, and Talia—each one navigating a divided existence, weighing their allegiance to the past, the future, to one another, and to themselves. Rich with Bogotá urban life, steeped in Andean myth, and tense with the daily reality for the undocumented in America, Infinite Country is the story of two countries and one mixed-status family—for whom every triumph is stitched with regret and every dream pursued bears the weight of a dream deferred.

This is a fundraising event celebrating the launch of Reed 154. The evening helps make possible several CLA community programs, including low-cost or free literary performances by the nation's best contemporary writers, creative writing workshops for the general public, and more. Thank you for your support!
